I never knew I had a food allergy until it almost killed me. I'd been working long hours and needed a break, so my boyfriend and I rode our motorcycles north from San Francisco along the coast for the weekend. It was the start of crab season in Mendocino County and that night we had a feast.
I didn't know what to think after dinner when my face began to swell, my throat tightened, and my airway started to close. I was having a severe allergic reaction and going into anaphylactic shock. I could hardly breathe and needed medical help right away. Luckily, the paramedics were there in a flash, but by then I could barely talk. My boyfriend told them about our feast, and they said that I had learned the hard way about my brand new shellfish allergy.
After that, I knew I had to always wear some kind of medical alert identification. I looked and looked at all the ID jewelry, but there really wasn't anything I liked. I studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, where I learned the skills to create my own ID jewelry, something stylish I'd actually wear. I was busy working long hours as a set dresser at Pixar Animation Studios, but whenever I got the chance I would head to my jewelry studio to try out new design ideas.
A friend saw one of my new designs and asked if I could create one for her. She never carries her wallet when she's running, so she wanted a way to carry her emergency contact information. I soon discovered other friends who needed ID jewelry too. Word spread and My Flying Star was born. My Flying Star now designs and manufactures modern jewelry for people who want a stylish way to carry their medical, emergency or other important information.
