Americans buy 400 million CFL bulbs every year because they last longer and use less electricity.
But, the EPA says they contain small amounts of mercury and if the bulb is broken that mercury can pose a health risk, especially to pregnant women.
Health officials say the bulbs must be disposed of properly.
California and several other states ban disposal of CFL's in landfills because of the contamination risk.
