Just in time for back-to-school, some new research might shed light on the "freshman 15," the extra 15 pounds new college students are said to pack on during their first year.

A study in the online Journal of Adolescent Health found female students in dorms with cafeterias tended to weigh more. Those who lived further from the dining halls weighed less.

Researchers say male students might not be affected because they do not tend to eat as much socially.

They recommend all students keep tabs on their weight and try to keep exercising.
