According to the USGS, the temblor rattled an area of unincorporated Santa Clara County near the Cherry Flat Reservoir shortly after 9 p.m.
Caused by a shift along the Calaveras Fault, the quake was centered about 10 miles east-northeast of San Jose and 15 miles southeast of Fremont with a depth of 1.5 miles, according to the USGS.
Two hours later, a second, smaller seismic event occurred along approximately the same area of the fault. The second quake -- also at a depth of 1.5 miles -- registered a preliminary magnitude of 1.4, according to the USGS.
