The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.5 struck Thursday night in Santa Clara County.

According to the USGS, the temblor rattled an area of unincorporated Santa Clara County near the Cherry Flat Reservoir shortly after 9 p.m.

Caused by a shift along the Calaveras Fault, the quake was centered about 10 miles east-northeast of San Jose and 15 miles southeast of Fremont with a depth of 1.5 miles, according to the USGS.

Two hours later, a second, smaller seismic event occurred along approximately the same area of the fault. The second quake -- also at a depth of 1.5 miles -- registered a preliminary magnitude of 1.4, according to the USGS.
