Caltrain employee pay goes up despite tough times

The Caltrain board of directors is expected to vote to raise fares and trim service when it meets Thursday to close a $2.3 million budget deficit. But a new report reveals those same executives gave themselves a pay raise: about 14 percent over the past three years.

The Bay Area News Group obtained the documents.

With benefits added in, total compensation jumped 34 percent. That money would be enough to save service and prevent drastic cuts.

Salary information for the conductors and engineers was not available, as these employees also work for Amtrak.

Caltrain defends the pay raises, saying employees are spending extra hours on the rail line.
