PG&E performing controlled gas purge in Palo Alto

Thursday morning residents in the Palo Alto area may smell natural gas in the air as PG&E performs another controlled purge of its gas transmission system.

Wednesday, the city of Palo Alto received several calls from concerned residents who smelled the gas. Officials say the slight gas odor does not pose any danger to the public.

PG&E says it is venting the gas to assess a pipeline as part of its project to check pipelines up and down the Peninsula in the wake of the deadly San Bruno explosion in September.
