Fire officials say it appears the fire smoldered before taking hold. The woman who lived in the apartment is in the hospital suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation and the firefighter was injured when equipment fell on his face in the aftermath of the blaze.
The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
