State lawmakers have a new plan to restore childcare subsidies cut by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger late last year.

Assm. Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles, is announcing Friday they have found a way to keep helping 55,000 low-income families.

They scraped together $60 million to fund the childcare subsidies through March then fully restore the program's funding in April, under Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed budget.

Supporters say eliminating the subsidies would force many parents to quit their jobs and cost taxpayers more through welfare.
