A professor at UC Davis' School of Veterinary Medicine is in hot water over an e-mail sent to his students.

In the letter, sent only to the third year veterinary class, students were asked to fill out a poll to decide how professor Edward Feldman should grade a student who had to miss some quizzes because she had to give birth.

Students could vote for six grading options, including awarding the student an "automatic 'A' final grade" or an "automatic 'C' final grade" among others.

The e-mail was not sent by Feldman, but by the presidents of the third year veterinary class.

The chancellor of UC Davis is pledging an investigation and swift action.
