Oakland's new mayor is taking a 25 percent pay cut. Mayor Jean Quan is giving back about $46,000 in salary.

Quan says with Oakland facing a $40 million deficit and more painful layoffs and furloughs ahead -- she wanted to lead by example. Quan is not the first mayor to take a pay cut.

Governor Jerry Brown turned down raises and kept his salary at $115,000 when he was Oakland's mayor.
