Mavericks unlikely as contest window closes

Unless something incredible and unexpected happens in the next few hours, there will not be a Mavericks surf contest on the San Mateo coast this year. The window for holding the event ends Monday and cannot be extended.

Organizers say a La Nina weather pattern led to a lack of big waves and other conditions needed for a world class surf competition. By contrast, last year, Pacific storms produced several opportunities to hold the contest.

There are estimates local merchants and service providers could lose as much as $24 million in business without the contest.
