Mavericks unlikely as contest window closes

SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif.

Organizers say a La Nina weather pattern led to a lack of big waves and other conditions needed for a world class surf competition. By contrast, last year, Pacific storms produced several opportunities to hold the contest.

There are estimates local merchants and service providers could lose as much as $24 million in business without the contest.
