San Jose man dies in combat in Afghanistan

A U.S. Army soldier from San Jose was killed Saturday in an attack on his unit in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Staff Sgt. Mark C. Wells, 31, was fatally wounded when insurgents detonated an improvised explosive device, department officials said. He was in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Wells was assigned to the 45th Sustainment Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
