The situation began about 7:30 Monday night in a house on Marin Avenue - about a half a block off the Alameda. Berkeley police received a call about gunfire coming from the house and then surrounded the home and blocked off the street. Police made contact with the man on the phone and talked to him throughout the night. At about 4 a.m. police went into the home and found the man.
"We called out our barricaded subject hostage negotiation team and attempted to negotiate with the individual. Just recently a team entered the house and found who we believe to be our subject suffering from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound," said Berkeley Police Sgt. Robert Rittenhouse.
Berkeley police never fired their guns at the subject. It is unclear whether any of the shots fired by the man left the house.
