Crews are trying to fix the problem, which occurred between the Embarcadero and Montgomery stations in San Francisco, BART spokesman Linton Johnson said.
Trains are being single-tracked through the area, Linton said.
San Francisco bound passengers are being asked to transfer on to the Pittsburg/Bay Point - SFO line at West Oakland or Macarthur stations until the problem is resolved.
