Military families return to Calif. from Japan

FAIRFIELD, Calif.

About 500 people arrived Tuesday at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield after voluntarily leaving the quake-ravaged country. The evacuees say they had mixed feelings about leaving.

Tuesday's flights were the first of at least 20 planned between Tuesday and Sunday. The Pentagon says the departure of military families will help reduce the demand for food, water and fuel.

Hundreds of thousands of Japanese citizens remain displaced and in need of supplies.
