ACLU says UC Davis spied on protesting students

DAVIS, Calif.

The students teamed up with the Sacramento chapter of the ACLU to make the announcement in a news conference Tuesday. They say the documents, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, show how the university tried control free speech protests.

Both students and the ACLU say the documents reveal how university police and even teachers worked together to monitor student activists.

The university says it is just trying to keep students safe.
