Insurance commissioner intervening in Sutter lawsuit

SAN FRANCISCO

California's insurance commissioner announced on Wednesday he is intervening in a whistleblower lawsuit against Sutter hospitals.

Commissioner Dave Jones made the announcement in front of the Sutter Hospital on California Street in San Francisco. The lawsuit claims Sutter committed fraud and Jones outlined what he said were false charges, on a copy of a bill he showed reporters.

"Sutter Hospital used an aesthesia billing code to charges for supplies already paid for or through the anesthesiologist's bill which is billed separately," said Jones.

Sutter is one of the largest hospital chains in California. In a prepared statement, the hospital denied the charges and said the case has no merit.
