Family of five displaced by 2-alarm house fire

SAN JOSE, Calif.

Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 1500 block of Santa Paula Avenue at 7:25 a.m. and found smoke pouring out of the windows, fire Capt. Scott Kouns said.

Smoke detectors woke up the two children, who started to scream at the sight of smoke. Their screams woke their parents, and everyone made it out of the home without injury, he said.

Flames were coming from the laundry room of the single-story house, Kouns said. Firefighters controlled the blaze within 30 minutes.

The cause remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross was notified and will assist the family with temporary housing, Kouns said.

Kouns stressed the importance of having a plan in place in case of an emergency.

"It really helps us out as far as what our priorities are," Kouns said. "Our first priority is life safety. If that's taken care of, we can concentrate all of our energy on the building."
