Concord, Navy kick off recycling project

CONCORD, Calif.

The goal of the project was to recycle nearly every ounce of metal and other re-usable material in more than 340 railroad boxcars.

The Navy used the boxcars to move weapons to the base. The Pentagon announced plans to close the base back in 2005 and the city has been working on a plan to re-use the land ever since.

Project managers expect to recycle about 10,000 tons of steel from the boxcars.
