Redwood City kids accept summer health challenge

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.

The Network For A Healthy California launched "Play Week" Monday, the official start of the Third Annual Power Up Your Summer Challenge. It is an effort to get kids to put down the soda, walk away from the TV and video games, and get out and run around.

"What the research shows is that they tend to gain weight twice as fast over the summer. So, we're out here to encourage them to stay active, stay healthy even over the summer, so cut down on that screen time, rethink your drink, have water instead of sugary beverages, and continue to play," Tuline Baykal said.

One group of Redwood City kids has accepted the challenge and is hoping to log more than 50,000 hours of active play this week.
