Car thefts are up in California

Fewer people are having their cars stolen in just about every state except California. It's particularly bad in the Central Valley. According to a new report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Fresno, Modesto and Bakersfield top the list of hotspots for car thefts. Vallejo ranks fifth on the dubious list.

The Sacramento area is sixth, followed by Stockton and Visalia and San Francisco and the East Bay rank ninth.

Police partially blame the economy. They say more unemployed people mean more potential thieves and tighter budgets mean there's more demand for cheap parts from stolen cars.
