The speed limit is 40 miles an hour approaching the S-curve, right before Yerba Buena Island. But sensors on the bridge and CHP officers have noticed the average speed has increased by 10 miles an hour at certain times compared to a year ago.
"People tend to pick up their speeds and as they pick up their speeds, they don't negotiate that S-curve as quite as they should and we've had some issues with the S-curve before," said CHP Ofc. Herman Quon.
Drivers will see the extra patrols for the next few weeks. Caltrans and the CHP will then decide if drivers have gotten the message and if any additional steps need to be taken.
