Crews have been installing 640 strategically placed listening devices that are being placed next to 384 critical eye bars. The devices will notify Caltrans immediately if there is a problem with one of the eye bars.
The is in response to a fatigue defect that was found on a structural steel beam in a regularly scheduled inspection during the 2009 Labor Day closure.
