Report: Muni dispatch violated rule before accident

The San Francisco Muni driver who hit and killed a pedestrian last week may have been outside his scheduled route in violation of company policy.

The accident happened last Friday afternoon at 18th and Hartford Streets in the Castro District. Twenty-three-year-old Emily Dunn was hit in the crosswalk.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the bus driver was driving to a new assignment on a route he picked himself. Company policy is for dispatchers to give a driver specific directions -- a Muni spokesman said that didn't happen.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The driver is on non-driving status.
