Homicide suspect shot after standoff in San Leandro

RICHMOND, Calif.

The suspect, 42-year-old Rafael Zarate, had been accused of stalking 30-year-old Jensy Romero. She was found dead Tuesday night where she worked at Angie's Bakery & Restaurant in Richmond. Two hours before her body was found, Richmond police received an anonymous call that a Hispanic male had been beating a Hispanic female in front of the restaurant. Police investigated and did not find anything until they were called out after Romero's death.

Wednesday morning, San Leandro police got a tip that Zarate was at a duplex at the 12500 block of Central Avenue. There was a standoff all day and night with San Leandro police. At 10 p.m., Richmond's SWAT team took over. At 1:40 a.m., the suspect came down the stairs holding what appeared to be a rifle. Officers shot the suspect, who is now in stable condition at a hospital. Zarate did not shoot at officers.
