Government paying millions to dead people

A watchdog report shows the government has paid more than $600 million in the past five years to deceased people.

In what has been described as one of the more damaging instances, the son of a beneficiary received payments for more than 37 years after his father died. The benefits totalled more than $515,000.

The payments are meant for retired or disabled federal workers.

The government has been aware of erroneous payments since 2005 but has yet to develop a system that can figure out which beneficiaries are dead and which are alive.
