Steel recycling plant catches fire in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif.

The fire broke out Thursday afternoon at the Schnitzer steel facility along Embarcadero West near Interstate 880 in Oakland.

Residents were being told to stay inside and keep their windows closed if possible.

Monitors from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District were on-scene to check for any potentially-harmful chemicals that may have been released.

Schnitzer is one of the largest metal recyclers in the country.
