San Francisco General Hospital has gained national certification for its treatment and research of traumatic brain injuries. It's the first in the country to earn that recognition.

The prestigious accomplishment comes after its high-profile treatment of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow. He suffered a traumatic brain injury after being badly beaten at Dodger Stadium in March.

The new certification was awarded based on the hospital staff's medical skills, imaging technologies and research.
