Spokesman Les Garcia says the incident began about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when a caller reported a man and woman were trying to open a gate in Stockton.
Garcia says when deputies arrived, a foot chase began. The woman was apprehended, but the man stole a truck from a railway worker and started driving away.
Garcia says a deputy grabbed onto the truck and shot the suspect in the upper body. The officer was then thrown from the vehicle and hit his head on the pavement.
The Stockton Recordreports the suspect was declared dead a half-mile away and the deputy was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries.
