Sports legends help kick off healthy message to kids

SAN JOSE, Calif.

Soccer star Brandi Chastain and three-time Super Bowl Champion Bubba Paris were on hand to promote exercise and healthy eating. There were games to get kids moving. But there was a serious message behind the healthy activities.

"If we don't turn this around one in every three children born in California this year will have diabetes or be severely overweight and have heart troubles and other side effects which are dangerous to one's health," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.

The Department of Education is promoting the healthy kids initiative. It's aimed at schools, child care programs and local communities. The initiative wants to get kids walking, bike riding and drinking more water. The program will also try to put more fresh ingredients into cafeteria meals.
