The San Jose Mercury News reports that city officials are now warning that unless the city workers are willing to modify their pension program, firefighters and police officers would have to be laid off -- leading to longer response times.
In addition, every city library and community center would have to close and there will be no more city recreation centers. Also, there would be no money to repair roads.
The dire predictions were released as city leaders make their case for declaring a fiscal emergency and cutting back city workers pensions without negotiating. A vote on the issue is expected in the next two weeks.
