DUI deaths are down, and in an interesting twist, that's exactly the reason state officials are stepping up their annual push to crack down on holiday drunk drivers.

Authorities are setting up a record number of DUI checkpoints throughout the state this holiday season.

About 150 checkpoints will be secretly set up over the next 17 days.

Around 950 people lost their lives in 2009, but DUI-related deaths have been on the decline in 2005, and the Office of Traffic Safety credits those checkpoints with a drop in the death rate.
