Janitor's arrest raises questions throughout district

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.

One parent instantly recognized the man in a photo as the custodian at Cambridge Elementary School in Concord. John Astor, 44, is now facing molestation charges with a child under 14.

One parent says it is time for an open discussion with his son, especially after the boy told us the custodian used to offer candy to him and his friends at school.

"I believe everybody [would] recognize him because he's the guy that works at Cambridge School," said Juan Carlos Mendoza, a student's father.

Other parents say they also recognized him working at Walnut Acres Elementary School, which is also part of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District.

"One time I see him and he said to my boy, 'Hey Carlos, how you doing?' and my boy says, 'I'm OK, I'm good.' And my boy told me, 'Father, he is working at Cambridge,'" said Mendoza.

Astor also worked at Holbrook Elementary School, not far away. Walnut Creek police say the child molestation case did not take place on campus, but now they're curious to know if there are others cases that did.
