Some cold medicines may soon require prescriptions

Californians may soon need a prescription for many popular over the counter cold medicines.

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would make any drug containing pseudoephedrine a controlled substance. Pseudoephedrine is a key ingredient in methamphetamines.

But prescription bill advocates say consumers will still have plenty of choices. They say there are at least 130 over the counter cold remedies that don't contain pseudoephedrine, and won't be restricted.
