Strap removed from elephant seal at Point Reyes

An elusive elephant seal on Point Reyes has finally been released from a packing strap that was slowly choking him.

The strap cut deep into the seal's skin. He was first spotted two years ago with the strap around his neck, but he eluded would-be rescuers. The 700 pound seal kept growing and the strap kept cutting deeper.

Earlier this week rescuers finally sedated him, cut off the strap, cleaned the wound and returned the seal to the ocean.
