Study links anesthesia to higher risk of ADHD

A new study suggests a link between anesthesia and the increased risk of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD.

Infants who undergo surgery requiring general anesthesia twice before their second birthdays were roughly twice as likely as their peers to develop ADHD by age 19. Having just one surgical procedure did not appear to increase risk.

The report is in this week's "Mayo Clinic Proceedings."
