Water pipeline leak prompts evacuations

FREMONT, Calif.

A Fremont fire spokesman said a pipe valve was left open or loose, allowing water to leak out when the pipeline was put back into service. The water shot out of a crevice below the interstate and flowed into at least six properties in the Warm Springs area.

Nobody was injured. The water was shut off about 30 minutes after the first fire trucks arrived.

Fremont fire officials say the damage is mostly in garages and yards, but water may have seeped into some homes.
