Suspected illegal immigrants found on CA beach

A group of people have been taken into custody after a suspected illegal immigrant-smuggling boat came ashore on a Los Angeles-area beach.

El Segundo police Capt. Bob Turnbull tells City News Service that the group of nearly 20 people was taken into custody about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday and would be turned over to immigration agents.

Turnbull says the incident is not believed to involve narcotics smuggling.

Smugglers have increasingly been using open boats known as pangas to try to smuggle people and drugs into California from Mexico.
