Theatres sell out at first showing of 'Hunger Games'

OAKLAND, Calif.

At Jack London Square some lucky movie goers got to see a special showing at 7 p.m. Thursday. The first person in line for that show arrived at 11 a.m.

Theatres throughout the Bay Area are holding staff over to work late into the night. "The Hunger Games" is showing in more than 4,000 theatres nationwide.

The film takes place in the future and is based on how the main character, played by Jennifer Lawrence, gets through The Hunger Games, which is a brutal, survival of the fittest, type game which pits teen against teen and all of it is televised. That's taking reality TV to a whole new level.

The opening weekend is expected to generate anywhere from $130 to $140 million, potentially making it the biggest March opener in history!

Fandango says it was selling 10 tickets per second.
