Scientists uncover cause of brain freeze

Scientists have uncovered the cause of brain freeze -- that instant headache brought on by slurping ice cold drinks or ice cream.

Researchers say it's triggered by an abrupt increase in blood flow in an artery that feeds the brain. When the headache is gone, the artery goes back to its normal size.

Scientists believe this is the body's effort to keep the brain from getting too cold. The study appears in the journal Experimental Biology.
