San Francisco to makeover Wholesale Produce Market

SAN FRANCISCO

Grocers and vendors were on hand as Mayor Ed Lee announced the $100 million makeover of the San Francisco Wholesale Produce Market. The market began 170 years ago near the waterfront and moved to its present location in the Bayview 50 years ago.

30 wholesale venders operate there and most of its 650 employees work off-hours to keep San Francisco fed. "This is a busy, busy market. It doesn't look so now, but if you come down here at 11:00 at night and when most of us are just finishing off the day, this is when their day is starting," said Kayren Hudiburgh at Good Life Grocery.

Four of the market's warehouses will be renovated and the surrounding streets will be upgraded.
