Police warning Danville residents of phone scammers

DANVILLE, Calif.

Scammers have been calling residents pretending to be a relative in jail and in need of bail money, police said.

"We've gotten some complaints recently of residents receiving these calls, one claiming to be their son, another claiming to be a grandson," police Chief Steve Simpkins said in a statement.

The scam, which started off as an email ploy, is fairly common, police said.

"Your best bet in those cases is to check with other relatives to determine if the person is traveling," Simpkins said.

Residents are also advised to call police before paying any money and the police will determine the validity of the claim, police said.
