4-alarm fire destroys house, damages 2nd home

SAN JOSE, Calif.

The fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m. The fire engulfed one home and then spread to the home next door.

The home's occupants were made aware of the fire by a neighbor, who saw the flames and went up and knocked on their door to see if anyone was inside.

Most of the damage done to the primary home occurred on the second floor, but the roof also collapsed in on a 1-story portion of the home.

San Jose firefighters received mutual aid from Santa Clara and Milpitas fire crews. Sixty-six firefighters from the various agencies battled the fire.

Although San Jose has made cutbacks to its fire department due to budget struggles and two engines were off Tuesday, but the department assures that there was no delay responding to the fire.

No injuries were reported.
