Gas smell prompts school evacuations in San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO, Calif.

Just before 11 a.m., PG&E received reports of a gas smell in the area of Williams Street, spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said.

Students from nearby John Muir Middle School and Woodrow Wilson Elementary School were evacuated as a precaution.

Sarkissian said PG&E crews checked approximately 10 locations near where the calls had come from and gave school staff the all-clear before noon to return to their buildings.

"We checked basically every place, every location that contacted us," Sarkissian said. "Everything's come back as negative. There has been no detection of gas."

Sarkissian encouraged anyone who smells a gas-like odor to contact PG&E.

"We certainly want people to feel comfortable to call us if they do smell gas," she said.

A representative from the school district did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
