Endangered whale found dead, likely hit by ship

SAN FRANCISCO

The 47-foot male juvenile fin whale was spotted Thursday on a remote beach at Point Reyes National Seashore. A necropsy found that the whale had a fractured spine and extensive injuries to its ribs and skeleton.

Experts believe it was hit by a ship somewhere in the Gulf of the Farallones.

Fin whale sightings are rare in the Bay Area, but experts say several endangered whale species have been spotted feeding off the coast in recent weeks thanks to an abundance of krill.
