Around 9 a.m., an employee at the loading dock of a Salvation Army found a "large thermos" with wires, duct tape, and a cell phone attached to the outside. It was found in an area where people don't usually drop off donations, prompting a call to police who said it looked like a possible explosive device.
Oakland police blocked off streets in the area bounded by Broadway, Webster, 6th, and 8th Streets and ordered people in the area to evacuate or shelter in place.
The Alameda County bomb squad responded to the scene and detonated the device around 11:30 a.m.
