San Francisco is considering installing parking meters around the zoo. The city says it is part of an effort to convince people to use mass transit, not a revenue grab.

The zoo charges $8 to park on weekdays and $10 on weekend and holidays. Currently there are also several blocks of free parking available on nearby Sloat Boulevard.

The city is already planning to put meters around AT&T Park and Mission Bay, and is also considering installing them around San Francisco State University.

Parking meters generate about $50 million a year for the city.
