BEYOND THE HEADLINES
August 12, 2012
Literacy
Hosted by ABC7's Cheryl Jennings
This week's episode delves into the issue of literacy in the Bay Area. According to the group "Pro-Literacy", 774 million people world-wide are functionally illiterate. 32 million of those people live in the United States.
We will take a look at various efforts to combat illiteracy. This includes battling the problem early on with inner-city children, as well as helping refugees gain English language skills. We will hear from an adult who is overcoming his illiteracy thanks to a dedicated tutor.
Our guests this week are passionate about empowering individuals through literacy and will share their experiences.
