CHP motorcycle fatally hit a pedestrian

OAKLAND, Calif.

At approximately 10:04 p.m. a collision between a woman and a California Highway Patrol motorcycle occurred on West MacArthur Boulevard, just west of Market Street, according to the CHP.

CHP Sergeant Roberto Barrera was driving a 2004 BMW patrol motorcycle and traveling west on West MacArthur Boulevard when a woman stepped off the sidewalk and began running across the traffic lanes and directly into the path of the patrol motorcycle, according to the preliminary investigation.

The motorcycle struck the 45-year-old, African-American woman. She was thrown into the road, and sustained major injuries. Sergeant Barrera was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the road, sustaining moderate injuries.

Both were transported to the hospital, where the pedestrian died as a result of her injuries. The CHP officer was treated and released.

Oakland police and the California Highway Patrol both responded to the scene of the collision and the incident remains under investigation.
