It's a remote controlled life-saving device called EMILY, which stands for Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard.
The small flotation device is controlled from the shore and allows human lifeguards to reach swimmers in trouble faster and more safely.
The flotation device is similar to a jet ski but is much smaller. It can reach speeds of about 20 miles per hour.
The life-saving unit costs about $10,000. It's being used in a half a dozen beach cities around the country. Last week, it made its first ocean rescue in Oregon.
